SIXTEEN

Elodie Marks wasn’t what he was expecting. She was short, deeply tanned, and had straight black hair that fell to her waist. He’d expected fierce and angry, but only saw an exhausted woman. She was sitting at the healer station in the middle of the ward, drinking orange juice and eating a sandwich.

“Hey,” she said when they approached.

“You look rough.”

“I bet. I got all the tumors with Liam. He was the worst off,” she said, pointing her thumb over her shoulder.

Arkyn looked over to see the boy propped up on a pile of pillows and talking to the healer.

“It’ll take three or four hours for my energy levels to come up enough to heal the next one. You need more healers,” she said softly.

“Janice is trying to find one, and we spread the word in the family. Hopefully, someone knows someone who’s willing to help. I need to talk to the kid. Liam?”

Elodie nodded. “Good luck. He’s cagey. It’s hard to blame him.”

“No, it isn’t,” Harmony agreed.

She went back to her food, and Arkyn followed Harmony to the bed at the end of the row near the back wall. The healer excused himself, and the boy’s eyes widened when he saw Harmony and took in her features and height. She sat in the chair next to the bed.

“You wouldn’t be a friend of Sunny Upshaw’s, would you?” she asked lightly.

Fear and hope crossed Liam’s face for a second before his expression cleared. Harmony took the chip they’d found out of her pocket and handed it to the boy, who accepted it and turned it over.

“Message in a bottle,” she said softly.

When Liam took a deep gulping breath and looked at her with bright eyes, Arkyn wondered if it was a code phrase all the kids knew. Harmony must have figured the same.

“Who are you?” he asked, handing the chip back.

“Harmony Marks.”

If anything, his eyes got wider.

“Like Marks International Marks?”

“Despite what you might have heard, we aren’t the boogeymen,” she said dryly.

The kid grinned. “Too bad ‘cause that’s what we need.”

Harmony’s amusement was short-lived. “Do you know how to find the others?”

“Maybe. We were staying at some abandoned apartments, but Ethan and I got sick. We moved into a different building on the street, hoping we wouldn’t spread it to the others. We got worse, so we decided to risk the free clinic.” He leaned towards the bedside table and Harmony handed him a glass of water. “That turned out to be a huge mistake. A couple of Delroi warriors showed up later and took us, but we always kept a watch. The others would have cleared out when they were sure it was clear. They would have left a message somewhere, though.”

“Guess I’ll be searching air vents again.”

“You didn’t have prearranged places to meet if you got separated?” Arkyn asked.

Liam looked at Harmony before he answered. Apparently, he’d decided she was in charge.

“Go ahead,” she said encouragingly.

“If anyone was looking for us, we assumed it would be Tel agents. We couldn’t risk getting caught and having our minds invaded.
